Self-Retracting Lifelines
10 products
A self-retracting lifeline (SRL) is a fall arrester in which the line pays out and retracts automatically as the worker moves, and locks to arrest a fall. This category covers compact webbing units from 2 m to 3 m, a 6 m Dyneema webbing model, and wire rope units of 6 m, 10 m, 15 m and 20 m with galvanised cable and impact-resistant housings, plus an aluminium rescue tripod for confined space entry and retrieval. Typical users work in construction, roofing, steel erection, warehousing, plant maintenance and utilities. In Europe these devices are covered by EN 360, revised in 2023, and in North America by ANSI/ASSP Z359.14, which classifies devices by intended anchorage position. Confined space tripods are commonly assessed as EN 795 Type B anchor devices. The range can be supplied OEM or private label.

Frequently asked questions
- What does EN 360 require of a self-retracting lifeline?
- EN 360 is the European standard for retractable type fall arresters. Among its dynamic performance requirements, the arrest force must not exceed 6 kN, and the device must arrest the fall within a limited distance. The standard was revised in 2023, so buyers should check which edition a product's certification refers to.
- Should I choose a wire rope or webbing SRL?
- Galvanised wire rope resists abrasion, dirt and grease well and is common on longer units used in construction and heavy industry. Webbing units, including those with Dyneema webbing, are much lighter and gentler on surfaces, but are more vulnerable to cutting and heat. Choose based on the work environment, the length needed and whether any edge exposure is expected.
- How long should the lifeline be?
- Short 2 m to 3 m units suit work close below an overhead anchor and are light enough to carry easily. Longer 10 m to 20 m units cover a wide working radius or deep vertical access from one anchor, but require more attention to swing fall and clearance below the user. Pick the shortest length that covers the work area.
- What is ANSI/ASSP Z359.14 Class 1 and Class 2?
- Under ANSI/ASSP Z359.14-2021, Class 1 self-retracting devices are for anchorages at or above the dorsal D-ring, while Class 2 devices may be anchored above or below it and must be suitable for edge use. Products sold in North America need to be evaluated to this standard separately from EN 360.
- What is the rescue tripod used for?
- A rescue tripod sets up a temporary overhead anchor above a manhole, shaft or tank opening, so a worker can be lowered in and retrieved with a winch or retrieval-type fall arrester. Tripods of this kind are commonly assessed as EN 795 Type B transportable anchor devices. Specify the winch and any fall arrester to be supplied with it when requesting a quotation.
How these are made
Fall Clearance Calculation: Lanyards, SRLs and Lifelines
Fall clearance calculation adds free fall, deceleration, harness stretch, D-ring height and a safety margin: about 18.5 ft below the anchor for a 6 ft lanyard, far less for an overhead SRL.
