Five chain sizes from 6 mm to 16 mm are listed for the 317A, each with drawing dimensions. The 6 mm hook measures L 108 mm, B 28 mm, E 24 mm and G 14.5 mm and carries a working load limit of 1.25 ton. Next come 7+8 mm (L 134 mm, 2.0 ton), 10 mm (L 169 mm, 3.2 ton) and 13 mm (L 208 mm, 5.4 ton), with the 16 mm hook measuring L 254 mm and G 37 mm, rated at 8 ton. Minimum breaking load is four times the WLL.
The clevis and pin attach the hook to the end link of the chain without a separate connector. Because the latch closes and locks automatically and stays locked until the operator presses the release trigger, the hook stays closed if the sling goes slack. It is used on chain slings for construction, shipyards and heavy maintenance. The 317A is lifting hardware, not fall protection equipment.
