A233 Aluminium Alloy Figure-8 Descender

A233 is the classic two-ring figure-8: the rope is passed through the large ring and around the neck, while the small ring is clipped to the harness with a locking carabiner. Friction is generated as the rope bends around the aluminium alloy body, and the user controls speed with the brake hand. The listed breaking strength is 25 kN, the entry point of the three figure-8 models in this range, alongside A234 at 30 kN and A235 at 40 kN.

Figure-8 descenders remain popular for recreational abseiling, canyoning, outdoor education and climbing-wall programmes because they are simple to teach and easy to inspect. They do not lock automatically, so they suit trained users working with a brake-hand discipline or a separate back-up.
